Chittagong University, Chittagong, Bangladesh
This is a small effort from the students of English, Chittagong University, to launch an interactive virtual cafe for the faculty and students of the Department. This blog will host study materials, links, papers, academic discussions and other intellectual exchanges. We would also like to include book and film reviews. This is only a beginning, but we hope it to be an ongoing and ever-expanding project. But surely we would never like to see this site to be a source of plagiarism and thus to be branded sponsors of academic dishonesty. We dream of developing it as a great seed store of ideas you could draw on to enrich your own original thoughts. We hope they will spark off your imagination, and eventually make a thoughtful person of you. Our aim is to make you learn to think and be yourself. We really do not mean it to be an alternative to the tommyrot from the bazaar that you guzzle and gobble to pass the examination.

I visited HYMN OF MUSES. It's a great site, though I don't yet know how to get around there. I'll learn it from you. I saw you kept a provision for voting there. But I think your site deserves more praise than just a vote (I smell a political stink in the term! Sorry!). I've really been looking for such a site for a long time. I'd love to meet any student there with their problems. This would obviate the necessity to meet personally or physically. Talking to students one to one is such a nasty business in CU with packs of scandal-mongers and peeping Toms prowling for sensation.

Syful Islam Sumon and Khan Touseef Osman said...

Dear sir,

Thanks for your compliments. We thought the opposite would happen.
Your course materials will be on the third year domain of our blogspot from saturday morning onwards. It needs some reformatting before being published. We're working on it now.
Thanks once again, sir, because, you know, the distance between teachers and students in our department is miles. We daren't approach most of our teachers even with our good efforts.

We're unbelievably happy that you're giving us your support in such an adverse atmosphere.

I wanna salute ur great effort that at last you made it happen! I hope it will give us a podium to stand on and simultaneously help us develop our academic thought further. Thanks to Masud Sir for his wholehearted cooperation and helpful advice to us. I think soon the site will come out in its fullest form to do something fruitful and creative beyond the four-walled classroom…
So now hope for the best……….

Thanks Anupom for your inspiring words. We hope to go ahead with our effort and we'll need lots of comrades like you throughout the long path. Hope you'll participate in the discussions we start.

Some words need be written. What words? The words packed with excitement for finding at last a piece of Masood Mahmud's intimacy?
We, the epitome of utmost backwardness (the CU English), are advancing... Better late than never to bridge the gaps and fill the silences between the young and mature minds.

Hail to thee, CU bloggers!

It looks you talk! Great! If you know how behind you are, it's a great piece of knowledge. Then, you are far ahead of me.

hello, i just wanna say that the new arrangement of ur page is fabulous. it's far easier to use. i have one suggestion, can u add some more books and links in the home page? that'll b great, i think. good luck to u developers for the great effort, especially when u work for something absolutely unprofitable.

Hi, this is great (though I have very little idea about English literature). Foreign universities have their own sites to do everything (from registration to submitting assignments). Your site can be an alternative. You can post available lectures, recent works, articles from renowned journals, library catalogs, photos etc. You can try to give the photos of the books, author's name, date of publication, price.. all (not just the name of the book). Discussion section is fine. Actually, the whole idea is awesome. goodluck to HYMN OF MUSES.. Carry on.

Its an interesting and also an intelligent website i think. Though I was a student English Dept. in CU but now more and more in a distant land. I am happy to see the involvment of my favourite teadher mr. masud mahmud. In MA I only attended his classes on T S Elliot's The Waste Land. Do you have anything about The WAste Land ? Is it still favourite to the students ?

Dear Shumon and Babu,
this is really a great effort (cool.......). I feel proud of you guys for doing this.
I've gone through with the comments. I believe, instead of feeling guilt of being unable to do anything or feeling backward, it's time to say 'lets do it now'. this is a good place to do so.
Thanks a lot and very special thanks to dear Masud Mahmud sir as well.
Cheers
Usha

I'm really happy to learn that my students still remember me. This is my Lifetime Achievement Award. I prize these comments from my dear students with great affection. I really feel guilty about not having known them closely when they were around.
Nevertheless now we can make up for that.
Cheers!

I see there's a requisition for The Waste Land. Of course, I'll write on it but the discussions could be focused if someone had broached some issues. Why can't we take new critical takes on the poem?

I INVITE ALL AND SUNDRY TO COME UP WITH ALL SORTS OF LITERARY QUESTIONS, WILD OR TAME, SANE OR INSANE.

HEY, LET'S GO GAGA GAGA!!!

this is da first time im visiting dis site.my dear teacher D.r Masud Mahamud told me about dis interesting enterprise while my masters exam was going on.At long last i feel happy to visit da site.Perhaps i have a little contribution to da founding of da blog(?)because i have so much disturbed him( over phone) with my questions on literature that prompted him to consent to such an enterprise to avoid physical contact. Thus disturbance turns to blessing for all.thanks to all who are concerned with dis blog.

it' wonderful to have a site where students and teachers can exchange their views on different issues but there should be involvement of other teachers as well along with our dear masud sir.

Shourabh and Sumon,
How far rearrangements will be going on in "the GREAT BOOKS FOREVER''?I would like to suggest you to select some books for this section which are common yet'forever young'.Why don't we practise a discussion on those?
The books which are not common are also welcome.
Thanking you

I heard a terrible news today'Our 3rd year exam will be deferred'.If this happens,it will be a hazardous matter for us.I think It is an obstacle for the advancement of our Department.

Syful Islam Sumon and Khan Touseef Osman said...

zinia aapu,

the problem is we've got an exam ahead and we can't turn our attention to anything else as long as the black cloud remains over our head. the thing u're suggesting has long been in our 'things to do' list but the exam is standing like the sphinx on our way to Thebes. plz wait till we answer to it's riddle. another thing, we really appreciate ur participation in our activities. cheers!

shourabh pothobashi

Unknown said...

Shourabh,
Thanks for your reply. The sphinx is reallly a naughty one.May be the riddles are too easy to answer.
Another proposal-why don't we try to inform the former students of this department of the blog.We can invite the former teachers also.
Once you requested me to tell my peers of the blog.Almost all visited the blog. But I don't think they have any intention to participate here. But some are interested in it.They've put their comments and proposals by this time.We are so active in downloading the so called notes or short notes from internet that we have to think twice before sharing our views.
Cheers! If the Cambridge students do such, why not us?

We've another 2546645 benchmark to cross through to reach Cambridge.
Is it not better to engage some present-teachers before the formers?

Nazrul,
I do agree with you.I mentioned Cambridge here to see others reflex.I am glad to see your reflex.Yes,we should represent the present ones first.

Shourabh Pothobashi said...

hello people,
talks are going on about engaging formar and also present teachers and students in our site. that's possible only if u all take the responsibility of informing them of it. i'm sure u don't think we two and Masud sir know each and everyone of those who were once a part of the instition. so, it's also ur job, man. as far as the current teachers (and students) are concerned, we can't drag anyone into it unless he/she has a positive will toward online communication with the students. we didn't need to ask for Dr. Masud Mahmood's help, u know. he lent us his hands himself at his own will. and computer illiteracy is another thing that may cause this poor participation on the part of the teachers. what i've written above is plain and simple truth...even if bitter.

Dear Dr.Masud Mahmood, yesterday,in the meeting, you mentioned that it's a question for scholars why students write impressionistic answers, for example,Shakespeare is the greatest of all dramatists, while dealing with a question on Shaw, they write,Shaw is the greatest dramatist.I think the response to this question lies in the way students are taught by their teachers. As a result,to many students, teachers are all right, they are demi gods and goddesses. So what teachers do should be the most right things in the world. It is teachers who design syllabuses.Their choices must be best.Otherwise such and such dramatists should not be chosen.Another reason is that many like high-flown language.Possibly it fills their heart, though not intellect. This kind of language serves two purposes. It fills some examiners' hearts as well as it flatters the choice of syllabus designers, presumably the examiners. So it may help some students to get a good mark in the exams. Moreover, many students tend to memorise things. So it's easy for them to remember phrases like GREATEST OF ALL,and to apply them as formulas for all the writers they come across. For the time being I've got these points. If I'll have more,I'll post them.By the by,I would like to thank you to be a participant of the Study Circle, and also thanks to Shourabh for all his initiatives.Bye.

THE HEART
Stephen Crane (1895)

In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, “Is it good, friend?”
“It is bitter ---- bitter,” he answered;
“ But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart.”

Like Moyna, I just want to raise up several questions on the poem.
1) On my first reading, the words are seemed familiar to me(simple)but the reality is that, it is difficult for me to ‘decode’ the poem then could I tell the vocabulary is complex?
2) The word ‘desert’ means large area with little waters and few plants. It means that we rarely find ‘life’ here. Does the ‘desert’ mean a heartless, cruel place?
3) If I take the ‘desert’ as a cruel place, could I tell the word is abstract?
4) The poet uses the word ‘ heart’ twice .I think in first stanza, it is quite concrete but in second stanza, it is used from abstract point of view . Am I right or wrong?
5) If I am right, the next question is ---- why does the poet use the concrete term in the mouth of the narrator or himself? And the abstract one in the mouth of the creature?
6) The word ‘creature’ means a living being, which is real, or imagery, can move as animal. But the poet describes it neither as real nor as imagery. The creature has bestial look but instead of being four footed, it has hands and sits in squatting way. We can easily detect that the creature is a human being(but not in general). Then why does the poet not use the word ‘man’ directly. Is it just for showing us the degeneration of humanbeings ?
7) Why does the poet address the creature as ‘friend’? Does it mean the poet stands in the same position as the creature ?
8) Why does the poet use ‘-----‘ between the word ‘bitter’ ?He can use’ ‘,’ in that place? What change does he want to show us by using ‘----‘. Does ‘---‘ creates more bitterness?
9) The last 3 lines of the poem ---“But I like it /Because it is bitter,/And because it is my heart.”make me puzzled . Please help me to remove my puzzlement.
10) I think the poem shows the degeneration of human soul. It indicates the people are heartless and eat up their own heart and some of us call them ‘friend’—is it an emotional presentation ? I can not judge.
11) Is the poem written in open form? What advantage does the poet get using the form?
12) Apart from the open form , it is written in ‘conversational’ style. Why does the poet use the style ? Does he use it to make a difference between ‘the creature’ like human being and the poet himself?
Perhaps, the questions are very simple. But I ask them because I want to judge whether my reading system is right or wrong. Please tell me what I have to do further.

THANKS

TANIMA

Dear Mr. Hussain,
I don't know who you are because your generic nomenclature puts you behind a suspicious mask. As you've chosen to call yourself by the last name to the world, you must be a gentleman, even, a Victorian gentleman! Never mind. But, alas, language is such a treacherous thing! Your language is sufficiently loaded to be provocative, because it seems to carry a spin of insinuation which I must unravel in point of honour. What do you mean by 'almost free from class-related business' anyway? It's too comprehensive if you do not set limits to the trope. It might range from dirty and nasty to noble and enterprising.I'm afraid your olfactory sense has been too much sharpened by your too much familiarity with the underside of the word 'business' beyond the pale. Shourabh and Sumon are doing an excellent job, which doesn't really deserve anything short of praise. As for myself, I ain't and never 'free' from my obligations to my students in the classroom, and all that I do outside the classroom is absolutely gratis yeoman service. My species is dying out and unfortunately, I'm afraid, you've never met my kind. I come from a distant world and time where and when we were common people galore in academia. Scarcity makes me look like a miracle that occasions your insinuation (!) That's why your pep talk can only draw fire and vituperation. God help you!
